Summer Reading signup starts today!
What will you read this summer?
We’ve moved summer reading online this year. Now you (or your kids) can create an online account to keep track of reading activities.
You can also earn snazzy badges for attending library programs and achieving your reading goals. We are excited to put a new spin on our traditional summer reading experience, for readers of all ages.

Twenty minutes a day
Twenty minutes a day is the magic number for keeping your reading skills sharp during the summer. Just like anything else, reading takes practice. Read a book, a magazine, or a manual for your favorite game – keep that brain busy! You can read as a family to learn new facts and skills, or discover more about where you live or where you are from.
Magazines, graphic novels, comic books and ebooks are all great ways to read. You can also download or listen to a book on cd, to turn that long summer drive into an exciting adventure.
Here are a few ideas for parents:
- Read in front of your kids. This shows them that reading is important to you and a worthwhile pursuit. It doesn’t have to be a novel. Magazines, do-it-yourself books, or even technical manuals all show the children in your life that reading is how you learn about the world around you.
- For very young children, point out the words in their everyday world – reading signs can become a fun game.
- Create a reading rich environment for your child. If you make it easy to find something to sit down to read, it is much more likely that they will.
- Bring them to the library. We have more books than you can keep in your house, and we love to send them home with you!
Spokane Is Reading
The Tsar of Love and Techno, by author Anthony Marra, is a collection of interconnected short stories set in the former Soviet Union. We are pleased to announce it is also this year’s selection for the annual community reading event, Spokane Is Reading.
Each story is beautifully written with characters whose humanity and beauty transcend the grittiness of situations they are placed in.
The New York Times says about Anthony Marra and his book, “He starts this miracle of a book by showing us how a system can erase the past, the truth, even its citizens. He ends by demonstrating, through his courageous, flawed, deeply human characters, how individual people can restore the things that have been taken away.”
This summer we invite you to read these powerful stories with us.
