Music + Art on First Fridays

james-frye-1We’re launching a new way to celebrate First Friday Artwalk and the art shows we host in art gallery at the downtown library. Starting in June, we will have live music to accompany the art receptions.

You’re invited!

  • First Friday Artwalk Celebration
  • Friday, June 3 from 5pm to 8pm
  • At the Downtown Library art gallery

The timing couldn’t be more appropriate, since our June artist, James Frye, is a synesthete – someone who sees color when listening to music. James’ fascinating paintings evoke the rich sounds that he absorbs when creating his work. In addition to music, his work is influenced by his favorite artists which include Kandinsky, Picasso, Charlie Harper, Jackson Pollock, and Keith Haring.

starlite-motel-2The art opening will be accompanied by the music of Starlite Motel. This mellow duo consists of husband and wife team, Beverly and Bob Gallagher. Beverly’s acoustic pop and percussion has an emphasis on melodies and harmonies with unique songs of love found & lost. Starlite Motel are regular features around town at venues such as Pig Out in the Park, the Rocket Market and Auntie’s Bookstore. You may also have met Bob at his record store, 4000 Holes where you can also see additional paintings by James Frye.

We hope you’ll join us Friday, June 3 for an evening of art and music from 5 – 8 pm in the art gallery on the first floor of the downtown library.

From “Birth of a Nation” to Ken Burns: The Civil War in Cinema

civil-warThe American Civil War has been a perennially popular subject in cinema. The war had been over for less than fifty years when movies began to reach the public on a large scale; many veterans were still alive to see their likenesses captured in celluloid. Over one hundred years later, this near-constant obsession with the Civil War not only reflects the nation’s ongoing attempt to understand a most traumatic period, it also illuminates changing attitudes about national identity and character.

Join film scholar Lance Rhoades in a conversation about the cinema the war has inspired and how it reflects changes in our nation.
